Parenthood & Research Careers: Perspectives on the balancing act of being a parent and life scientist

Apr 16, 2024 –

Pursuing a successful career in the life sciences and starting a family should not be mutually exclusive, but figures and experience show that for many early career researchers the choice is one of either/or.

Effect of novel Lck mutation in CID patients

Feb 6, 2024 –

CRC 1160 member Susana Minguet (B01) investigates the effect of a novel mutation in Lck on TCR signaling, T-cell function, and differentiation in patients with combined immunodeficiency (CID).

CRC 1160 Researchers are creating the basis for improved diagnostics and targeted therapy with a new classification of childhood immune diseases.

Jan 31, 2024 –

When autoimmune diseases occur in childhood and are accompanied by swollen lymph glands or an enlarged spleen, this indicates a congenital disorder of the immune system. The exact diagnosis is difficult, but crucial for therapy. A study by  Stephan Ehl (A01) at the the Centre for Chronic Immunodeficiency, Medical Center – University of Freiburg has now provided new insights into autoimmune lymphoproliferative diseases in children.

Clear directions for use of λ-chain locus

Jan 25, 2024 –

The findings of the CRC 1160 member, Susana Minguet (B01), address an important question and provide some clear directions for the use of the λ-chain locus.

New function of FAS in modulating mTOR activation

Jan 16, 2024 –

A new study, led by CRC 1160 member Marta Rizzi (B02), relates classic disease markers – such as dysfunctional B cell differentiation – to a pathway triggered by non-apoptotoc signaling from the FAS protein

Unlocking the Intricacies of Gamma-Delta T Cells

Jan 4, 2024 –

Gamma-delta T cells represent a distinctive subset within the T cell family, and their implications in cancer have been under rigorous investigation. A recent study, led by CRC 1160 member Sagar (B08 and Z02), involved researchers from the Medical Center – University of Freiburg, including Maike Hofmann (CRC 1160, A02) and Robert Thimme (CRC 1160, A02), and Institut Curie Paris, shedding light on the diversity and tissue residency of gamma-delta T cells across various organs in mice.

Improving the efficacy of cancer immunotherapy with modified CAR-T cells

Nov 7, 2023 –

CAR-T cell therapy is a last hope for many patients with blood, bone marrow or lymph gland cancer when other treatments such as chemotherapy are unsuccessful. A limiting factor of this otherwise very effective and safe therapy is that the cells used in the process quickly reach a state of exhaustion. Susana Minguet (B01) and Wolfgang Schamel (University of Freiburg) have now been able to prevent this exhaustion and thus significantly improve the effect of the therapy in a preclinical animal model. The new results have been published in the journal Nature Immunology.
