Mechanisms of hepatitis E virus persistence and immunopathology in immunocompromised patients

Project Summary

The project will address the impact of virus-specific CD8+ T cells in the two opposing outcomes of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection: viral clearance in immunocompetent individuals versus viral persistence and immunopathology in immunocompromised individuals. Specifically, the goals are to define and characterize the first HEV-specific CD8+ T cell epitopes, to analyse the mechanisms of HEV-specific CD8+ T cell failure (e.g., T cell exhaustion, viral escape), and to identify correlates of immunopathology in persistent HEV infection.
